Coruba Original Dark has been a fixture of the rum landscape for decades, particularly in markets like New Zealand and Australia where it has achieved something approaching cult status. Produced in Jamaica from a blend of pot still and column still rums, it is a dark, richly flavoured spirit that makes no pretensions to sophistication but delivers exactly what it promises: bold, uncompromising Jamaican flavour.
The rum is a blend of Jamaican distillates aged for a minimum of two years in oak barrels, with caramel added for colour. The pot still component provides the intensity and character, while the column still element contributes smoothness and drinkability. At 40% ABV, it is bottled at the standard strength for the category, though the intensity of flavour suggests something considerably stronger.
On the Nose
The nose is big and unapologetic — thick molasses and dark treacle, with a pronounced brown sugar sweetness. The Jamaican pot still character is evident: overripe banana, tropical fruit, and a subtle funky quality that adds depth. Coffee and dark chocolate provide a dark, roasted character, while a hint of coconut and vanilla from the oak ageing adds warmth. There is a slight bitterness, like dark cocoa or coffee grounds, that adds complexity. It is a nose that promises robust, full-flavoured rum — and it delivers.
The Palate
On the palate, Coruba is rich and sweet, with molasses and brown sugar leading. The Jamaican character comes through clearly — tropical fruit, banana, and a subtle pot still funkiness that gives the rum genuine personality. Dark chocolate and coffee add depth, while caramel and toffee provide sweetness. The mouthfeel is medium to full-bodied, with a slightly syrupy quality. Warm spices — allspice and a touch of cinnamon — are present but restrained, adding warmth without overwhelming the molasses character.
The Finish
The finish is medium in length, with lingering molasses, coffee, and a pleasant warmth. The brown sugar sweetness persists, gradually giving way to a drier, more bitter chocolate conclusion. It is a straightforward, satisfying finish that works well both neat and in cocktails.
Coruba is excellent in a rum and cola, where its bold character cuts through the mixer with authority. It is also a solid choice for a Dark 'n Stormy variation, where the molasses richness pairs beautifully with ginger beer. In baking, it adds genuine Jamaican character to rum cakes and chocolate desserts. This is honest, working rum at an honest, working price.
