Solid cocktail workhorse
Havana Club 3 is my go-to for Mojitos and Daiquiris. Light and crisp with a gentle sweetness from the sugarcane, a hint of vanilla, and a clean finish. It doesn't try to be anything fancy — just a well-made white rum that lets the other ingredients in your cocktail shine.
21 October 2025Good complexity for a white
Interesting blend with noticeable Jamaican character peeking through — a slight overripe banana note that adds personality. The Barbadian component keeps it smooth and the Trinidad element adds lightness. A bit pricier than basic whites but you taste the difference.
9 October 2025Outclassed by the competition
Twenty years ago this was the default white rum. Now there are so many better options at the same price point. Flor de Cana, Doorly's, even own-brand supermarket rums have more character. Bacardi feels like it's coasting on brand recognition alone. Thin, bland, and forgettable.
2 January 2026Lovely but hard to find
The rum is excellent — bright cane character, floral notes, well-judged ageing with vanilla and oak. But Neisson's small production means bottles are difficult to source outside of Martinique and specialist retailers. When I find one, I savour it. Just wish it were more available.
16 January 2026Good everyday white rum
Solid and dependable. The four-year ageing gives it more character than your typical mixing white rum — some vanilla, a hint of caramel, a dry clean finish. Not as complex as Probitas or Plantation 3 Stars, but considerably cheaper. Fair trade certified too, which is a nice bonus.
11 February 2026My go-to spiced rum
I've settled on Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced as my regular choice. The quality of the base rum elevates everything — you get actual rum character alongside the vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg spicing. The oak barrel influence adds caramel and depth. Brilliant in a Dark and Stormy.
27 January 2026Incredible in hot drinks
Wood's Old Navy in hot chocolate is transcendent. The 57% strength means the molasses, treacle, and dark chocolate notes survive the heat and mingle with the cocoa. It also makes the finest hot toddy — rum, honey, lemon, hot water. A winter essential.
15 February 2026The one true Dark and Stormy
Gosling's literally trademarked the Dark and Stormy, and with good reason — this rum with ginger beer is perfection. Rich molasses, brown sugar, butterscotch, and a hint of vanilla. The dark, syrupy character floats beautifully on ginger beer. An absolute classic.
18 October 2025A baker's best friend
This is my go-to rum for cooking and baking. The intense molasses, coffee, and caramel flavours hold up brilliantly in rum cakes, bananas foster, and rum balls. The Jamaican funk adds depth you can't get from other dark rums. Affordable and dependable.
23 February 2026Rich and satisfying
There's something deeply satisfying about the weight and richness of Gosling's Black Seal. Heavy molasses, butterscotch, vanilla, and a touch of bitter chocolate on the finish. It's not subtle but it's not trying to be. A proper dark rum that delivers exactly what you want.
22 October 2025Great in cocktails, OK neat
This is really designed for mixing rather than sipping. The heavy molasses and brown sugar character is wonderful in a Dark and Stormy or a Rum Punch, but on its own it can feel a bit one-note. The butterscotch sweetness is pleasant but there's not a lot of complexity.
7 March 2026History you can taste
The oldest commercial rum distillery in the world, operating since 1703, and Mount Gay XO lives up to that heritage. Refined and complex with vanilla, butterscotch, leather, and oak. There's a dignity to this rum that newer distilleries can't replicate.
16 March 2026Jamaica in a bottle
If you want to understand what Jamaican rum is all about, start here. 63% ABV of pure pot still funk — overripe banana, tropical fruit, a hit of ester-rich fire that's absolutely exhilarating. Essential in a Rum Punch and brilliant in a Daiquiri if you're brave enough.
12 February 2026The gateway drug of rum
This is the rum that converts whisky drinkers, wine drinkers, and people who claim they don't like spirits. The rich, sweet, chocolate-and-toffee profile is irresistible. Yes, it's sweet. Yes, it might have some dosage. But it tastes absolutely incredible and has introduced thousands to the joy of rum.
17 November 2025Old Fashioned excellence
While I normally sip this neat, Mount Gay XO makes the most incredible Rum Old Fashioned. The butterscotch and vanilla notes play beautifully with the bitters, and the oak spice adds another dimension. The Barbadian refinement elevates the cocktail enormously.
25 February 2026Reliable and consistent
Every bottle tastes the same, which is what you want from a mixing rum. Light body, gentle vanilla and almond notes, clean dry finish. It won't change your life but it'll make a very good cocktail every single time.
1 January 2026My grandfather's rum
Wood's Old Navy was what real men drank in my grandfather's day. The 57% proof, the dark molasses intensity, the burnt sugar and chocolate — it's unfashionable and unapologetic. But there's a soul to this rum that trendy brands can't replicate. Pour it with respect.
28 February 2026Volcanic terroir in every sip
The volcanic soil of Mount Pelée gives J.M's sugarcane a distinctive mineral richness that comes through in the spirit. The VSOP ageing adds vanilla, caramel, and oak, but the terroir always shines through. A more robust, earthy agricole than Clément. Very compelling.
24 January 2026Does what it says on the tin
It's Bacardi. It's clean, it's light, it mixes well with cola or in a Mojito. There's a gentle vanilla sweetness and not much else. It's not going to win any awards but it's reliable and available everywhere. The Coca-Cola of rum.
23 January 2026Baking and cooking champion
The navy strength means the rum flavour survives any cooking process. Christmas pudding, rum sauce, rum baba, brownies — Wood's Old Navy makes them all better. The dark molasses, treacle, and chocolate notes permeate everything. Keep a bottle in the kitchen.
