Habitation Saint-Etienne sits in the commune of Gros-Morne in Martinique, surrounded by the sugarcane fields that provide the fresh-pressed juice at the heart of every rhum agricole. The VSOP expression — aged for a minimum of four years in French oak casks, many previously used for cognac — represents the sweet spot in HSE's range: old enough to have developed genuine complexity, young enough to retain the vibrant cane character that defines the agricole style.
Rhum agricole occupies a unique position in the rum world. Where the vast majority of rums are distilled from molasses — the byproduct of sugar production — agricole is made from freshly pressed sugarcane juice, giving it a fundamentally different character. Martinique's AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) ensures strict standards of production, from sugarcane variety to distillation proof, making it one of the most tightly regulated spirits categories in the world.
On the Nose
The nose opens with the unmistakable grassy, vegetal freshness of sugarcane — bright and alive, like walking through a cane field after rain. Oak aging has softened this into something more refined, adding layers of vanilla, dried apricot, and honey. There is a floral quality — almost like dried flowers — and a gentle spice of cinnamon and nutmeg from the French oak. A mineral quality, chalky and clean, underpins everything.
The Palate
On the palate, HSE VSOP reveals its sophistication. The sugarcane character is still present — that fresh, grassy brightness — but it has been transformed by oak into something more complex and layered. Vanilla and butterscotch provide sweetness, while the French oak tannins add structure and a gentle drying quality. There are notes of tropical fruit — mango and papaya — alongside the dried apricot from the nose. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and elegant, with the 45% ABV providing warmth without aggression.
The Finish
The finish is long and refined, with the sugarcane grassiness returning as a final echo alongside persistent vanilla and a gentle oak spice. There is a lovely bitterness at the very end — like dark chocolate — that adds sophistication and prevents the finish from being merely sweet.
HSE VSOP is superb neat, where its complexity can be fully appreciated. It also makes a remarkably sophisticated Ti Punch — the traditional Martinican serve of rhum, lime, and cane syrup. For those accustomed to molasses-based rums, this is a revelation: a completely different expression of what sugarcane can become, and a compelling argument for agricole as one of rum's most refined and rewarding styles.
