First Impressions
Marie-Galante is a tiny island just off the coast of Guadeloupe, and Distillerie Bielle is one of its few remaining distilleries. This 2011 vintage, matured for eight years and bottled by Belgian indie bottler Asta Morris at cask strength (53.9%), is the kind of spirit that rum enthusiasts seek out — small production, single cask, from a place most people have never heard of.
Tasting Notes
The nose is intensely cane-driven. Sugar cane dominates, with tropical fruit and dried herbs adding complexity. Oak spice and floral notes develop as the spirit opens. The high-proof power demands respect. On the palate, the power matches the intensity — sugar cane depth, tropical fruit, and herbal complexity create a multi-layered experience. Oak structure and maritime minerality add dimension.
The finish is very long, with sugar cane, tropical fruit, and herbs layering alongside a persistent maritime quality.
How to Drink It
Neat with water added gradually. The 53.9% rewards dilution, which reveals floral and tropical fruit notes hidden beneath the intensity.
The Bottom Line
Bielle 2011 earns an 8 — exceptional single cask agricole from a remote island distillery. At £148, the rarity and cask-strength quality justify the premium. A bottle for dedicated agricole enthusiasts.
