Plantation O.F.T.D. — Old Fashioned Traditional Dark — is the product of a remarkable collaboration between master blender Alexandre Gabriel and a panel of some of the world's most respected bartenders, including Jeff "Beachbum" Berry, Martin Cate (Smuggler's Cove), and the late David Wondrich. The brief was simple: create the ultimate overproof dark rum for cocktails. The result is a 69% ABV monster that delivers flavour with the subtlety of a tropical hurricane.

The blend draws from three origins: Guyana (Diamond Distillery), Barbados (West Indies Rum Distillery), and Jamaica (Long Pond). Each component is aged for several years before being blended and bottled at its formidable strength. The Guyanese element provides the dark, molasses-rich backbone; the Barbadian contributes smoothness and balance; and the Jamaican adds the pot still funk and tropical fruit that gives O.F.T.D. its extraordinary aromatic intensity.

On the Nose

The nose is immense — a wall of dark molasses, brown sugar, and treacle, with an almost overwhelming intensity. Beneath the molasses sits a riot of tropical fruit: banana, pineapple, and overripe mango from the Jamaican component. There is dark chocolate, espresso coffee, and a warm vanilla oakiness. The Guyanese element provides leather and tobacco, while a pronounced Jamaican funk adds fermented fruit and a hint of petrol. Despite the 69% ABV, the alcohol is remarkably well-integrated — present but not harsh.

The Palate

On the palate, O.F.T.D. is a force of nature. The 69% ABV delivers an immediate, warming rush of flavour — dark molasses, brown sugar, and treacle in abundance. The tropical fruit follows, banana and pineapple from Jamaica, joined by dark chocolate and coffee from the Guyanese component. The Barbadian element provides a surprising smoothness that tempers the intensity. The mouthfeel is thick, oily, and full-bodied — almost chewy. Warm spices — allspice, cinnamon, and clove — build through the palate, while the Jamaican funk adds a savoury complexity that prevents the sweetness from becoming monotonous.

The Finish

The finish is phenomenally long and warming, with persistent molasses, coffee, and tropical fruit. The alcohol warmth builds and sustains, while the spices continue to evolve. There is a final burst of dark chocolate and a dry, oakish quality that provides closure. It is a finish that demands respect and rewards patience.

O.F.T.D. was designed for cocktails, and in a Zombie, a Navy Grog, or a rum punch, it is absolutely devastating. The 69% ABV ensures that no amount of fruit juice or mixer can dilute its presence, while the extraordinary flavour complexity means that even a simple rum and cola becomes something memorable. This is a bartender's rum, created by bartenders, and it belongs behind every serious bar in the world.
