First Impressions
Oxenham Craft Distillery in Mauritius is a rising star in the rum world, and their Bougainville White is the foundation of the range. The slow, low-temperature fermentation of Mauritian molasses over up to 14 days creates a spirit with more character and depth than quick-fermented alternatives. Multiple awards confirm the quality.
Tasting Notes
The nose is clean and inviting. Sugar cane and tropical fruit lead, with gentle vanilla and a sea breeze minerality that hints at the island origins. It's more aromatic than most white rums.
On the palate, it's smooth and fruity. Tropical character dominates, with vanilla sweetness and a clean mineral note adding interest. The extended fermentation shows in the body — there's substance here that cheaper white rums lack. It's well-crafted and balanced.
The finish is clean and medium, with tropical fruit fading to gentle warmth.
How to Drink It
Excellent in a Daiquiri where the tropical character and extra body elevate the cocktail. Also good in a Mojito or simply with soda and lime.
The Bottom Line
Bougainville White earns a 7 — genuine craft quality from an emerging distillery with real credentials. At £27.50, it's competitively priced for the quality level. Mauritian rum is worth watching, and this is a fine introduction.
