Chairman's Reserve is the flagship rum of St. Lucia Distillers, the only rum producer on the small volcanic island of Saint Lucia. The distillery is remarkable for housing both a traditional copper pot still (the John Dore) and a Vendôme column still, giving master blender Deny Alphonse an unusual range of flavour profiles to work with. Chairman's Reserve is a blend of rums from both stills, aged for a minimum of five years in ex-bourbon barrels.
Saint Lucia sits in the Windward Islands, south of Martinique and north of Saint Vincent. The volcanic soil, mineral-rich water, and tropical climate create conditions that are ideal for both sugarcane cultivation and spirit maturation. The island's isolation has helped preserve a rum-making tradition that is distinct from its more famous Caribbean neighbours — neither as funky as Jamaica nor as refined as Barbados, but occupying its own unique position in the spectrum.
On the Nose
The nose is inviting and well-balanced — caramel and vanilla arrive first, followed by ripe banana and tropical fruit. There is a pleasant oakiness with hints of coconut and toasted wood, along with a gentle spice — cinnamon and nutmeg in equal measure. The pot still element contributes a subtle fruitiness and a hint of earthiness, while brown sugar and molasses provide a sweet foundation. It is a nose that feels harmonious and complete, with no single element dominating.
The Palate
On the palate, Chairman's Reserve is smooth and approachable, with a complexity that reveals itself gradually. The entry is honeyed and warm, with caramel and vanilla leading into brown sugar and toffee. Tropical fruit — banana, mango, and a hint of pineapple — provides a bright, fruity character, while the oak ageing contributes toasted wood, coconut, and a gentle tannic structure. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and balanced, with a smooth texture that makes it dangerously drinkable. Warm spices build gently through the mid-palate.
The Finish
The finish is medium-long, with lingering caramel, tropical fruit, and a pleasant oakiness. The spices continue to build, with cinnamon and a hint of allspice providing warmth. There is a final note of brown sugar and a gentle dryness that provides a clean, satisfying conclusion.
Chairman's Reserve is versatile — excellent neat, superb on the rocks, and magnificent in a Mai Tai, where its balanced character provides the perfect foundation for the cocktail's complex flavour profile. It is a rum that rewards exploration and invites return visits, revealing new facets with each glass.
