This is a shame, because Don Q Cristal is a genuinely excellent white rum that offers more character and flavour than its crystal-clear appearance might suggest.
Produced by Destilería Serrallés, a family-owned operation that has been making rum in Ponce, Puerto Rico, since 1865, Don Q Cristal is distilled from blackstrap molasses using a multi-column distillation process. The rum is aged for one to one and a half years in American white oak barrels before being charcoal-filtered to remove colour. This brief ageing adds a subtle complexity that elevates it above purely unaged white rums.
On the Nose
The nose is clean and inviting — fresh sugarcane and light vanilla provide a pleasant foundation. There is a gentle citrus quality, reminiscent of lime zest, along with a hint of coconut and a subtle tropical fruit note. The oak contact is perceptible but restrained, adding a whisper of caramel and a slight creaminess. A touch of white pepper provides a gentle lift. It is a more expressive nose than many white rums, with enough character to reward attention.
The Palate
On the palate, Don Q Cristal is crisp and clean, with a smoothness that belies its modest price. In a Mojito or Daiquiri, Don Q Cristal performs admirably — the subtle character adding just enough interest to elevate the cocktail without competing with the other ingredients.
