Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced: Warmly Spiced and Inviting
Spiced 45% ABV ABV Destileria SerralesBalanced and easy-drinking
A well-made spiced rum that doesn't overdo it. The vanilla and cinnamon are present but not overwhelming, and the Don Q base rum adds a smooth, slightly creamy character. Works well with cola or ginger beer. The oak influence is a nice touch.
Underrated Puerto Rican gem
While everyone buys Captain Morgan, Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced quietly offers a far superior product. The Serrallés family's rum-making expertise shows — the base spirit has real character, and the spicing is natural and well-balanced. Vanilla, cinnamon, allspice, and genuine oak.
My go-to spiced rum
I've settled on Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced as my regular choice. The quality of the base rum elevates everything — you get actual rum character alongside the vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg spicing. The oak barrel influence adds caramel and depth. Brilliant in a Dark and Stormy.
Nice but not distinctive enough
Don Q Oak Barrel is well-made but doesn't stand out in a crowded spiced rum market. The vanilla and cinnamon are pleasant, the oak influence adds some depth, but there's nothing that makes me reach for it over Chairman's Reserve Spiced or even Sailor Jerry.
Good quality, poor availability
The rum itself is very good — well-balanced spice with a quality base and genuine oak character. But outside of Puerto Rico and certain US markets, it's nearly impossible to find. If you can get it, snap it up. The vanilla, cinnamon, and allspice blend is very natural tasting.
Quality shines through
You can taste the Serrallés family's century-plus of rum-making experience in every sip. The base rum is smooth and characterful, the spicing — vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice — is balanced and natural, and the oak barrel influence adds a welcome depth. A spiced rum made by people who genuinely know rum.
Puerto Rican spice with depth
Don Q starts with their quality aged rum and adds vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove with a careful hand. The oak barrel ageing of the base rum gives it genuine depth — you get caramel and vanilla from the wood alongside the spice notes. More sophisticated than most spiced rums.
