Flor de Caña 4 Extra Seco is a white rum with hidden depth. Produced at the foot of the San Cristóbal volcano in Nicaragua, it is distilled using volcanic spring water and aged for a full four years in American oak barrels before being filtered to remove colour. That ageing period — longer than many dark rums — gives it a smoothness and complexity that belies its clear appearance.

The Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua has been producing rum since 1890, and the family-owned distillery has earned Fair Trade and carbon neutral certifications — a rarity in the spirits world. The volcanic terroir and slow, natural fermentation contribute to a spirit of notable purity.

On the nose, expect vanilla, coconut, light banana, clean mineral notes, and a touch of toasted oak. The palate is smooth and rounded with vanilla, subtle coconut, light tropical fruit, and a whisper of oak. The finish is medium-length with vanilla and a clean, slightly dry close.

An excellent choice for a refined Daiquiri or a Cuba Libre where the rum's smoothness can shine. The four years of ageing add a dimension that most white rums lack.

The 'Extra Seco' name is accurate — this is drier than most white rums. There's a pleasant nuttiness from the barrel ageing, light vanilla, and a clean mineral finish. Works well in cocktails where you don't want too much sweetness.

Solid and dependable. The four-year ageing gives it more character than your typical mixing white rum — some vanilla, a hint of caramel, a dry clean finish. Not as complex as Probitas or Plantation 3 Stars, but considerably cheaper. Fair trade certified too, which is a nice bonus.

I can't believe more people don't talk about this rum. Four years aged, volcano-filtered, fair trade certified, and it costs almost nothing. The nose has toasted almond and honey, the palate is clean with vanilla and a touch of white pepper on the finish. Incredible value.

The trick of ageing then filtering back to clarity really works here. You get the vanilla and oak softness from four years in barrel without any colour. The result is a white rum that punches well above its weight class. Dry, clean, with genuine depth.

Love the story behind this — naturally filtered through volcanic soil in Nicaragua. Whether that makes a real difference or not, the rum itself is excellent. Dry, clean, with a subtle oak influence from four years in barrel. Makes a cracking Mojito.

9/10

At this price point, with four years of genuine ageing, Flor de Caña 4 is unbeatable. The dry, clean profile with vanilla, toasted almond, and honey makes it equally good in cocktails or on the rocks. The clean mineral finish is refreshing. A seriously underrated rum.

Four years of ageing in bourbon barrels, then filtered to clarity. The result is a white rum with genuine depth — vanilla, honey, a touch of toasted coconut, and a clean dry finish. Far more interesting than most white rums. Brilliant in a Daiquiri.
