Flor de Caña has been produced by the Pellas family in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua, since 1890, making it one of Central America's longest-established rum producers. The distillery sits at the foot of the San Cristóbal volcano — Nicaragua's highest and most active — and the volcanic soil, tropical heat, and altitude all contribute to the rum's character. The 7 Gran Reserva is the sweet spot of the range: genuinely aged, smooth, and accessible, without the premium price of older expressions.

Flor de Caña holds the distinction of being one of the few mainstream rum brands that can claim "naturally sweet" — the company states that no sugar, honey, or flavour additives are used in any of their expressions. Independent testing has generally supported this claim, though debate continues in rum enthusiast circles. The rum is aged in ex-bourbon barrels in the volcanic lowlands of western Nicaragua.

On the Nose

The nose is clean and appealing. Vanilla and caramel lead, sweet and inviting, with butterscotch and a gentle toffee quality. The oak spice is moderate — cinnamon and a hint of nutmeg — and there is a subtle tropical quality: banana and coconut at low volume. Brown sugar and a gentle molasses note provide depth, while a faint floral quality adds a touch of elegance. The nose is not complex in the way that Jamaican or Guyanese rums can be, but it is refined and well-balanced.

The Palate

On the palate, Flor de Caña 7 is smooth and easy-drinking. The entry is all vanilla and caramel — clean, sweet, and immediately satisfying. Mid-palate, the oak provides structure: a gentle tannin, cinnamon warmth, and a coconut quality that adds depth. Brown sugar and a touch of dark honey provide sweetness without cloying, and there is a subtle coffee note that adds a pleasant bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and smooth at 40% ABV, with a silky quality that makes this dangerously easy to drink.

The Finish

The finish is medium, with vanilla and cinnamon persisting alongside a gentle oak dryness. The caramel fades gracefully, and there is a final warmth — comfortable and inviting — that encourages the next sip. The finish is clean and satisfying without being demanding.

Flor de Caña 7 is versatile. Neat, it is a pleasant, unchallenging sipper — the kind of rum you pour without overthinking when friends come round. On the rocks, it opens up slightly, the dilution releasing more of the vanilla and tropical notes. In cocktails — particularly a Rum Old Fashioned or on the rocks with a squeeze of lime — it performs admirably. At its price point, this is one of the best everyday aged rums available, a testament to over a century of Nicaraguan rum-making tradition.
