Gosling's Black Seal: Bermuda's Legendary Dark Rum
Dark 40% ABV ABV Gosling Brothers LtdThe benchmark dark rum
Every dark rum is measured against Gosling's Black Seal, and most fall short. The blend of rich molasses, caramel, butterscotch, brown sugar, and subtle spice is perfectly calibrated. It has presence and depth without being overwhelming. The Dark and Stormy exists because of this rum, and that alone earns it legendary status.
Great in cocktails, OK neat
This is really designed for mixing rather than sipping. The heavy molasses and brown sugar character is wonderful in a Dark and Stormy or a Rum Punch, but on its own it can feel a bit one-note. The butterscotch sweetness is pleasant but there's not a lot of complexity.
A bit too sweet for me
The molasses and brown sugar sweetness is quite pronounced, even for a dark rum. I prefer something with more oak and spice to balance things out. It makes a decent Dark and Stormy where the ginger beer cuts through, but neat I find it cloying after a glass.
Bermuda's gift to the world
I visited Bermuda and now I understand why they're so proud of this rum. The deep, dark colour isn't just for show — it delivers rich molasses, caramel, brown sugar, and a hint of spice. In a Dark and Stormy with good ginger beer, it's absolutely sublime.
Perfect winter warmer
On a cold evening, Gosling's Black Seal is everything you need. The deep molasses warmth, the butterscotch sweetness, the hint of vanilla and spice — it wraps around you like a blanket. Excellent with ginger beer or warmed with a cinnamon stick and a slice of orange.
Rich and satisfying
There's something deeply satisfying about the weight and richness of Gosling's Black Seal. Heavy molasses, butterscotch, vanilla, and a touch of bitter chocolate on the finish. It's not subtle but it's not trying to be. A proper dark rum that delivers exactly what you want.
The one true Dark and Stormy
Gosling's literally trademarked the Dark and Stormy, and with good reason — this rum with ginger beer is perfection. Rich molasses, brown sugar, butterscotch, and a hint of vanilla. The dark, syrupy character floats beautifully on ginger beer. An absolute classic.
