Gosling's is Bermuda's oldest surviving business, founded in 1806 when Ambrose Gosling arrived on the island with a cargo of spirits. Over two centuries later, the family-owned company remains the island's most famous export, largely thanks to their Black Seal Rum and its starring role in the Dark and Stormy. The Old Rum expression is their premium aged offering — a blend of pot and column still rums from various Caribbean distilleries, aged and blended in Bermuda.
What makes Gosling's Old Rum distinctive is the Bermudian blending tradition. Rather than showcasing a single distillery's character, it draws on multiple sources to create a blend of harmonious complexity. The component rums are aged between three and six years before final blending and additional resting.
On the Nose
The nose is warm and inviting — rich caramel and vanilla dominate, with a deep molasses sweetness that grounds the aroma. Behind this, there are notes of dried tropical fruit, a hint of banana, and a gentle oakiness. A faint whiff of coffee and dark chocolate adds depth. The overall impression is one of comfort and familiarity — this is a rum that smells like it has nothing to prove.
The Palate
On the palate, Gosling's Old Rum delivers a smooth, medium-bodied experience. Brown sugar and toffee lead, followed by vanilla, tropical fruit, and a gentle spiciness — cinnamon and nutmeg — that provides warmth without heat. The molasses character from the nose carries through, giving the rum a deep, rounded sweetness. The oak influence is subtle, adding just enough dryness to prevent the rum from becoming cloying.
The Finish
The finish is medium length, warm and sweet with lingering toffee and a pleasant spiciness. Clean and satisfying, it leaves you reaching for another sip.
In a Dark and Stormy — the trademarked cocktail that pairs Gosling's with ginger beer — Old Rum is magnificent, its caramel depth playing beautifully against the ginger's spice.
