Hampden Estate has emerged from relative obscurity to become one of the most talked-about distilleries in the rum world. Located in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica, it has been producing rum since 1753, and its pot still rums are renowned for their extraordinary ester content and the complex, funky character known as 'hogo'.
The 60% Overproof expression adds oak ageing to the equation, creating a rum that balances Hampden's wild, funky character with the smoothing, integrating influence of time in wood. The minimum four years in tropical oak brings vanilla, toffee, and tannin structure without taming the fundamental nature of the spirit.
On the nose, expect tropical fruit esters layered over oak, vanilla, banana, pineapple, butterscotch, and hogo funk. The palate is rich and layered with tropical fruit, oak integration, vanilla, banana, allspice, toffee, and unmistakable Hampden funk. The finish is very long and complex.
Outstanding neat with a few drops of water, and transformative in a Mai Tai. This is Jamaican rum at its finest — authentic, undoctored, and magnificent.
