Myers's Original Dark has been a fixture of back bars and kitchen cupboards since 1879. Produced in Jamaica from a blend of up to nine different rums, it is the epitome of the dark rum style — deeply coloured, intensely flavoured, and unapologetically sweet. While it may lack the prestige of single-estate bottlings, Myers's has earned its place through sheer reliability and an extraordinary ability to elevate every cocktail and recipe it touches.

The rum is a blend of Jamaican pot still and column still distillates, aged for up to four years in white oak barrels. The deep, almost black colour comes from a generous addition of caramel — this is not a rum that pretends to be something it isn't. The blend is designed to deliver maximum flavour impact, and on that score, it delivers emphatically.

On the Nose

The nose is big and bold — thick molasses, dark treacle, and brown sugar arrive with force. There is a pronounced Jamaican pot still character: overripe banana, tropical fruit, and a subtle funkiness that adds complexity. Coffee and dark chocolate provide depth, while a warm oakiness contributes vanilla and a hint of coconut. There is a slight bitterness, like coffee grounds or burnt sugar, that adds a savoury edge. This is a nose that means business.

The Palate

On the palate, Myers's is rich, sweet, and full-flavoured. The molasses and brown sugar are immediately present, followed by dark chocolate, coffee, and caramel. The Jamaican pot still character provides tropical fruit — banana and mango — along with a subtle funkiness that prevents the sweetness from becoming monotonous. The mouthfeel is medium to full-bodied, with a slight syrupy quality from the caramel. Warm spices — allspice and a hint of cinnamon — provide depth.

The Finish

The finish is medium-long, with persistent molasses, coffee, and a pleasant bitterness. The brown sugar sweetness lingers, gradually giving way to a drier, more oak-influenced conclusion. It is a sturdy, reliable finish that works as well in a cake as it does in a cocktail.

Myers's is essential in tiki cocktails — its dark, rich character is what makes a Planter's Punch or a Dark 'n Stormy variation truly sing. Floated on top of a Mai Tai, it provides the visual drama and flavour punch that the cocktail demands. In baking, it is simply the best dark rum available at its price point. This is not a sipping rum, nor does it aspire to be — it is a working rum, and it works extraordinarily hard.
