Neisson is the smallest of Martinique's active rhum agricole producers, and for many enthusiasts, the finest. Located in the commune of Le Carbet on the Caribbean coast, beneath the shadow of Mont Pelée, the distillery has been in the Neisson family since 1932. The estate grows its own sugarcane — primarily the Blue Cane variety, prized for its flavour — and controls every stage of production from field to bottle.
The Réserve Spéciale is aged for a minimum of four years in re-charred American oak barrels, in accordance with the AOC Martinique regulations. The fresh sugarcane juice is pressed within hours of harvest and distilled in Neisson's copper Creole column still, which produces a spirit of remarkable purity and intensity. The small scale of production — Neisson produces a fraction of the volume of larger houses like Clément or Saint James — allows for extraordinary attention to detail.
On the Nose
The nose is vibrant and expressive — fresh sugarcane and crushed green leaves provide an intensely vegetal agricole character. The oak ageing has added layers of vanilla, caramel, and toasted coconut, but the cane juice foundation remains dominant. There are tropical fruit notes — banana, mango, and a hint of passion fruit — along with a floral quality that is distinctly Neisson. A peppery spice, both white and black pepper, adds lift, while a subtle smokiness hints at the volcanic terroir. It is a nose of extraordinary vivacity.
The Palate
On the palate, Neisson Réserve Spéciale is intense and characterful. The sugarcane and grassy agricole character is pronounced, providing a backbone of flavour that is unmistakably Martiniquais. The oak ageing contributes vanilla, butterscotch, and a gentle toffee sweetness, but these never overwhelm the terroir-driven cane character. Tropical fruit provides brightness — banana and mango in particular — while warm spices of cinnamon and allspice add depth. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and lively, with an almost electric quality that keeps the palate alert.
The Finish
The finish is long and complex, with the sugarcane character persisting alongside warm oak and a building peppery heat. There is a final note of dried grass, honey, and a mineral quality that speaks to the volcanic soil of Le Carbet. It is a finish that captures the essence of its place — specific, authentic, and unforgettable.
Neisson Réserve Spéciale is magnificent neat, where its terroir expression can be fully appreciated. In a Ti' Punch, it provides an intensity and complexity that larger-production agricoles cannot match. This is a rum for those who seek authenticity and character above all else — a small-production treasure from one of the Caribbean's most distinctive distilleries.
