First Impressions
Papa Rouyo is a small Guadeloupean distillery that has caught the attention of Luca Gargano and the Habitation Velier label. This 2022 white expression benefits from extended fermentation, which develops the tropical fruit character that makes great agricole blancs so captivating. Bottled at 56.7% without ageing, it's a rum that showcases the raw quality of Guadeloupe's sugarcane.
Tasting
The nose is vibrant and alive. Fresh grass and tropical fruit lead — the extended fermentation has clearly done its work, bringing out notes of passion fruit and guava alongside the green, grassy sugarcane character. Green banana and white flowers add dimension, and there's a herbal lift that keeps things interesting.
The palate is beautifully fresh. Grassy sugarcane provides the foundation, with tropical fruit sweetness adding richness. Herbal depth — think fresh herbs rather than dried — weaves through the mid-palate, green banana adds texture, and white pepper provides gentle spice. The texture is rich and oily despite being unaged, and the 56.7% ABV is remarkably well-integrated.
The finish is medium-long with grass, tropical fruit, herbal complexity, and a clean sugarcane close.
The Bottom Line
At £99.95, Papa Rouyo White 2022 is priced for the agricole enthusiast rather than the casual buyer, but the quality justifies the investment. The extended fermentation has produced a blanc of real complexity, and Velier's selection ensures only the best casks reach the bottle. A blanc agricole for the connoisseur.
