Plantation 3 Stars represents an increasingly popular approach to white rum: multi-origin blending. Rather than sourcing from a single distillery or country, master blender Alexandre Gabriel combines white rums from three distinct Caribbean traditions — Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad — to create a spirit that is greater than the sum of its parts.
The Jamaican component, from the Long Pond distillery, provides pot still character and tropical fruit notes. The Barbadian element, from the West Indies Rum Distillery, contributes smoothness and balance. The Trinidadian rum, from Angostura, adds a crisp, clean backbone. Each component is aged briefly in bourbon barrels before being blended and filtered to remove colour — a process that retains much of the complexity gained during ageing while presenting as a clear, unaged spirit.
On the Nose
The nose is remarkably complex for a white rum. Fresh sugarcane and vanilla arrive first, followed by light tropical fruit — banana, pineapple, and a hint of coconut. The Jamaican pot still character provides a subtle funkiness that adds depth, while a gentle creaminess suggests the brief oak contact. There is a clean, mineral quality and a hint of white pepper that provides lift. This is not a neutral spirit — it has genuine character and personality.
The Palate
On the palate, Plantation 3 Stars delivers more flavour than most white rums dare to offer. The entry is smooth and slightly sweet, with sugarcane, vanilla, and light caramel. The tropical fruit character is present but restrained — banana and pineapple providing a gentle backdrop. The Jamaican funk adds a savoury note that prevents the rum from becoming one-dimensionally sweet. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied for a white rum, with a smooth, rounded texture that speaks to the quality of the blending.
The Finish
The finish is clean and medium in length, with a pleasant sugarcane sweetness and a hint of vanilla. The Jamaican character provides a final note of tropical fruit and a subtle dryness that keeps things interesting. It is a finish designed for cocktails — present enough to contribute but clean enough not to interfere.
In a Daiquiri, Plantation 3 Stars is exceptional — the multi-origin complexity adding dimension to the classic cocktail without overwhelming the lime and sugar. In a Mojito, the subtle Jamaican funk provides an intriguing counterpoint to the fresh mint. This is a white rum that takes mixing seriously, and it deserves to be taken seriously in return.
