First Impressions
Depaz is one of Martinique's great estate distilleries, situated on the slopes of Mont Pelée. The Vieux Plantation is their entry-level aged expression — distilled from estate-grown sugar cane, fermented on-site, and aged for at least three years in oak casks. At 45% ABV, it's bottled at a strength that retains the character of the cane while showcasing the influence of the wood.
Tasting Notes
The nose combines fresh and aged character. Sugar cane and dried grass provide the agricole foundation, while vanilla and caramel from the oak add warmth. Gentle oak and tropical fruit round things out, with warm spice adding interest.
The palate is where three years of ageing shows. Rich cane character remains at the core, but vanilla warmth and caramel sweetness from the oak have added depth and roundness. Herbaceous grassiness provides the agricole identity, and warm spice and oak depth add complexity. The balance between cane freshness and oak maturity is well-judged.
The finish is medium-long, with cane sweetness and oak warmth fading to a grassy herbal close.
How to Drink It
Excellent neat or on the rocks — the 45% ABV handles ice well without losing character. Also makes a superb Ti'Punch where the aged character adds depth to the classic serve.
The Bottom Line
Rhum Depaz Vieux Plantation earns a 7 — a well-made aged agricole from a respected estate at a competitive price. At £37, it's excellent value for AOC Martinique quality. A fine introduction to aged agricole for those who've only experienced blanc.
