Rhum J.M is produced at the oldest continuously operating distillery on Martinique, founded in 1845 on the Fonds-Préville estate in the commune of Macouba, at the island's northernmost tip. The distillery sits at the foot of Mont Pelée, surrounded by its own sugarcane fields — a rarity in an era when most distilleries buy their cane from external growers. This estate-grown approach gives J.M control over the entire production process, from field to bottle.

The Blanc expression is J.M's unaged white rhum agricole, bottled at 50% ABV — the strength at which agricole blanc is traditionally served in Martinique. It is not a delicate spirit. This is raw, powerful, and uncompromising: fresh sugarcane juice, distilled and bottled without the softening influence of oak.

On the Nose

The nose is extraordinary in its intensity. Fresh-cut sugarcane leaps from the glass — green, grassy, and vegetal — accompanied by a powerful floral bouquet: jasmine, ylang-ylang, and a hint of white pepper. There is tropical fruit too — green banana and fresh mango — but the dominant impression is of the cane itself, alive and pulsing with energy. At 50% ABV, there is heat on the nose, but it enhances rather than obscures the aromatics.

The Palate

On the palate, J.M Blanc is an explosion of flavour. The sugarcane character is fierce and immediate — grassy, peppery, and slightly mineral. Tropical fruit follows: banana, lime zest, and a hint of coconut water. The mouthfeel is surprisingly full for an unaged spirit, with an oily viscosity that coats the tongue. There is a savoury quality — almost olive-like — that adds unexpected complexity. The 50% ABV provides a warming, peppery heat that persists throughout.

The Finish

The finish is long and persistent — grassy sugarcane, white pepper, and a lingering tropical sweetness. There is a clean, almost briny minerality at the very end that speaks to the volcanic terroir of northern Martinique.

Rhum J.M Blanc is the quintessential Ti' Punch rum: pour a measure, add a disc of fresh lime and a barspoon of cane syrup, stir, and drink. In a Daiquiri, it is magnificent — the agricole funk and intensity cutting through the citrus with authority. This is rum at its most elemental, and it is thrilling.
