Rum Bar is produced by Worthy Park Estate, Jamaica's oldest sugar estate, and their Gold Overproof expression is a powerhouse of Jamaican rum character. Bottled at a formidable 65% ABV — well above the traditional navy-strength threshold — this is a rum that demands respect and rewards those who approach it with an open mind. It is the kind of rum that Jamaicans themselves drink, mixed into fruit punches and cocktails or enjoyed with a splash of water.

The rum is produced entirely from estate-grown sugarcane, distilled on Worthy Park's pot still, and aged for a minimum of two years in American oak before being bottled at its full, cask-strength potency. There are no additives, no sugar, and no colour corrections — what you see and taste is pure Jamaican pot still spirit, concentrated to its most intense expression.

On the Nose

The nose is an explosion of Jamaican funk. The pot still esters are front and centre — overripe banana, mango, and pineapple, almost fermenting in their intensity. Behind the fruit sits a raw, funky quality: olive brine, nail varnish, and a savoury note that Jamaican rum aficionados call "hogo." Oak contributes vanilla and a gentle coconut, but the fruit and funk dominate completely. At 65% ABV, the alcoholic heat is noticeable, but it does not overwhelm the aromatics.

The Palate

On the palate, Rum Bar Gold is intense and unapologetic. The overripe tropical fruit is explosive — concentrated banana, mango, and guava delivered at maximum volume. The pot still character adds depth: a rich, oily body with notes of brown sugar, molasses, and a distinctive savoury, almost meaty quality. The oak provides vanilla and coconut, along with a cinnamon spice that adds warmth to the already considerable alcoholic heat. The mouthfeel is thick and coating, with an intensity that lingers on every surface.

The Finish

The finish is very long and warming, with the tropical fruit and Jamaican funk persisting alongside growing peppery heat. The molasses sweetness provides a foundation, while the oak tannins add a drying quality. The final note is of allspice and banana — quintessentially Jamaican.

Rum Bar Gold Overproof is not a sipping rum — or rather, it is, but only for the brave. Its natural habitat is in cocktails where its intensity can be an asset: a Rum Punch where the fruit funk amplifies fresh juices, a Daiquiri where the concentrated flavour shines through citrus and sugar, or the traditional Jamaican mixed drink with lime juice and sugar. Diluted, it opens up beautifully, revealing layers of flavour that the full proof conceals. This is Jamaican rum at its most authentic.
