First Impressions
Saint James is one of Martinique's most historic and respected distilleries, and their Imperial Blanc represents the quality end of white agricole rum. Distilled from fresh sugar cane juice under the AOC Martinique appellation — which sets strict standards for production — this is agricole made properly, by people who've been doing it for generations.
Tasting Notes
The nose is fresh and floral. Sugar cane leads with white flowers and green herbs. Lime zest adds brightness, and there's a mineral freshness that speaks to the terroir. It's clean and inviting without being simple.
The palate shows clean cane character — the hallmark of good agricole. Floral brightness and herbal complexity add interest, with citrus zest and balanced sweetness keeping things engaging. The body is good for 40% — there's enough weight to carry the flavours without heaviness.
The finish is medium, with sugar cane sweetness fading to a clean herbal close.
How to Drink It
Ti'punch is the obvious choice — a measure of rhum, a coin of lime, and a barspoon of cane syrup. Also makes an excellent Daiquiri where the cane character adds a dimension that molasses-based white rums can't match.
The Bottom Line
Saint James Imperial Blanc earns a 7 — excellent white agricole at a remarkably competitive price. At £24.50, it undercuts many competitors while delivering genuine AOC Martinique quality. An essential bottle for anyone exploring the agricole category.
