First Impressions
Saint James is one of Martinique's largest and best-known distilleries, and the VO expression — aged for three years in small casks — represents their accessible entry into aged agricole. The extended contact with smaller barrels softens the funkier tones of rhum agricole, wrapping them in vanilla, toffee, and gentle oak.
Tasting
The nose is soft and inviting. Vanilla and toffee lead, with almond and light oak adding depth. There's sugarcane sweetness beneath and a gentle floral note. The funkier agricole characteristics have been tamed by the three years of ageing, making this an approachable nose for newcomers.
The palate is smooth. Vanilla and toffee sweetness dominate, with soft oak providing structure. The agricole funk is muted but present — enough to add character without challenging. Dried fruit adds complexity, and the overall character is rounded and easy-drinking. At 42%, it's gentle on the palate.
The finish is medium with vanilla, oak, and a warm toffee close.
The Bottom Line
At £41.50, Saint James VO is a solid gateway to aged Martinique agricole. It won't challenge experienced agricole drinkers, but it provides a genuinely pleasant drinking experience and serves as an excellent introduction to the style. Good value for an AOC Martinique expression.
