Caroni is the great lost distillery of the rum world. Located in Couva, Trinidad, it was closed in 2002 when the state-owned sugar company was dissolved, and no rum has been distilled there since. The remaining stocks — barrels of heavy, industrial-strength rum aging slowly in warehouses — have become some of the most coveted spirits on earth, released periodically by Velier and other bottlers to a devoted and increasingly desperate following.

This 17-year-old expression is from the heavy rum tradition that made Caroni famous. Distilled on the estate's pot still from blackstrap molasses, it was aged in Trinidad before being bottled at cask strength without the addition of sugar, colour, or flavour. What you taste is pure Caroni — and there is nothing else quite like it.

On the Nose

The nose is immediately distinctive and utterly polarising. Where most rums present fruit, caramel, and sweetness, Caroni leads with tar, asphalt, and engine oil — yes, genuinely. Behind this industrial curtain lies a treasure trove: dark chocolate, espresso, leather, and a deep, smoky quality that evokes burning rubber in the most positive sense imaginable. There is some fruit — overripe banana and a hint of mango — but it plays a supporting role to the darker, heavier notes. The nose is challenging, fascinating, and completely unique.

The Palate

On the palate, Caroni delivers an experience unlike any other rum. The tar and asphalt notes from the nose translate into a smoky, almost medicinal quality on the tongue, backed by intense dark chocolate and bitter espresso. The molasses character is dark and brooding — not sweet but earthy and mineral. Oak provides firm tannin and a drying quality, while the tropical ageing has concentrated the flavours to an extraordinary degree. The mouthfeel is thick, oily, and commanding. Despite the intensity, there is an underlying elegance — each flavour is distinct, nothing is muddled.

The Finish

The finish is extraordinarily long. The tar and smoke persist, joined by leather, tobacco, and a dark coffee bitterness that seems to last forever. Gradually, a sweetness emerges — molasses and dark treacle — providing a counterpoint to the intensity. The final note is one of warm ash and earth, a fitting farewell from a distillery that is itself returning to the earth.

Caroni 17 Year Old is not a rum that will please everyone, and it is not meant to. It is a singular expression of a distillery that broke the rules, made rum its own way, and left behind a legacy in barrels that grows more precious with each passing year. Drink it neat, slowly, and with the awareness that every sip brings you closer to a world that no longer exists. This is liquid history.
