Foursquare's Exceptional Cask Selection has become the benchmark against which all premium Barbadian rum is measured, and Sovereignty may be the finest release yet. Distilled on Foursquare's twin pot and column stills and aged for fourteen years in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, this is a rum that represents the absolute pinnacle of what transparent, additive-free rum production can achieve.
Richard Seale has been the industry's most passionate advocate for honest labelling and additive-free production. Every Exceptional Cask Selection carries a guarantee: no added sugar, no added colour, no flavour additives. The age statement reflects the youngest rum in the blend. What you taste is pure distillate and oak, nothing more. In an industry rife with obfuscation, this transparency is both refreshing and increasingly influential.
On the Nose
The nose is magnificent. Layer upon layer of complexity reveals itself over time — initial waves of vanilla and butterscotch give way to darker notes of tobacco, leather, and coffee. Dried fruit appears in abundance: fig, date, and dark raisin. There is an oak spice — cinnamon and clove — that provides structure, and a subtle tropical character, overripe mango and banana, that anchors this unmistakably in Barbados. The sherry cask influence adds richness without dominating.
The Palate
On the palate, Sovereignty is breathtaking. The entry is rich and velvety — dark chocolate and toffee coating the tongue before expanding into a complex mid-palate of dried fruit, oak tannin, and baking spice. The pot still and column still components are perfectly balanced: the pot still provides depth and funk, while the column still adds elegance and refinement. At 62% ABV, there is considerable power, but the heat is entirely integrated into the flavour rather than sitting on top of it. A drop of water opens additional notes of honey and coconut.
The Finish
The finish is extraordinarily long — five minutes or more of evolving flavour. Dark chocolate and espresso dominate initially, giving way to leather and tobacco, before a final, lingering sweetness of molasses and honey brings the experience to a satisfying close. The oak provides a dry, tannic backbone that prevents the finish from cloying.
Foursquare Sovereignty is not merely a great rum — it is a great spirit, full stop. It stands alongside the finest aged whiskies, cognacs, and brandies in the world, and it does so at a fraction of their price. This is essential drinking for anyone who cares about craft, integrity, and the heights that rum can reach when made with uncompromising honesty.
