The spiced rum category has long been dominated by brands that prioritise sweetness and marketing over genuine quality. Chairman's Reserve Spiced from St. Lucia Distillers is a welcome exception — a spiced rum that begins with a genuinely excellent base spirit and adds real Caribbean spices rather than synthetic flavourings. The result is a spiced rum that even purists can respect.
The base is a blend of pot still and column still rums from St. Lucia Distillers, aged in ex-bourbon barrels before being infused with a proprietary blend of locally sourced spices and natural ingredients. These include cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, vanilla, and a maceration of local fruits and barks. The rum is then rested to allow the flavours to marry before being bottled at 40% ABV. The deep amber colour comes from the ageing and the spice infusion rather than from added caramel.
On the Nose
The nose immediately distinguishes itself from the synthetic sweetness of mass-market spiced rums. Rich cinnamon and nutmeg lead, but they are integrated into a genuine rum character — caramel, vanilla, and a hint of the pot still tropical fruit that characterises the Chairman's Reserve house style. There is brown sugar and molasses, along with a pleasant oakiness and a subtle clove note. A hint of banana and coconut adds Caribbean warmth. The overall impression is of a spiced rum that smells like actual rum with actual spices, which sounds obvious but is rarer than it should be.
The Palate
On the palate, Chairman's Reserve Spiced delivers genuine complexity. The rum base is clearly present — caramel, brown sugar, and tropical fruit providing a solid foundation. The spices are well-balanced, with cinnamon and nutmeg leading, joined by clove and a warm vanilla sweetness. There is a pleasant bitterness from the bark extracts that adds depth and prevents the sweetness from becoming cloying. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and smooth, with a warmth that builds gradually. The pot still element adds a subtle fruitiness — banana and mango — that gives the rum a Caribbean authenticity that many spiced rums lack entirely.
The Finish
The finish is medium-long, with lingering cinnamon, vanilla, and a pleasant warmth. The rum character persists alongside the spices, with brown sugar and a hint of oak providing a satisfying conclusion. There is a final note of nutmeg and a gentle bitterness that keeps the palate interested. It is a finish that works beautifully both neat and in cocktails.
Chairman's Reserve Spiced is excellent with ginger beer, where the real spices complement the mixer beautifully. It also makes a superb Spiced Rum Punch with lime and tropical fruit juices. For those who have written off the spiced rum category, this bottle may well change your mind — it proves that "spiced" need not be a synonym for "artificial."
