Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum takes its name and aesthetic from Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins, the father of American traditional tattoo art who plied his trade in Honolulu during and after the Second World War. The connection to rum is tenuous — Collins was a sailor, sailors drank rum — but the branding is distinctive and the rum itself is a solid, well-made spiced expression that has earned genuine respect in the trade.
The base spirit is a blend of Caribbean rums, primarily from the U.S. Virgin Islands, infused with natural spices and vanilla. At 40% ABV, it is bottled at the standard strength for the category, though the intense vanilla and spice character gives it a presence that belies the modest alcohol content. The recipe was reportedly developed in collaboration with bartenders, which explains its cocktail-friendly flavour profile.
On the Nose
The nose is dominated by vanilla — rich, sweet, and unmistakable. Beneath the vanilla sits warm cinnamon and a hint of clove, along with caramel and toffee sweetness. There is a subtle lime note and a gentle oakiness that provides depth. Brown sugar and a touch of molasses anchor the sweeter notes, while a hint of nutmeg adds complexity. The overall impression is of vanilla extract and warm baking spices — comforting and immediately appealing.
The Palate
On the palate, the vanilla continues to lead, joined by warm cinnamon and a caramel sweetness. The rum base provides a subtle molasses character that prevents the flavours from becoming purely confectionery. Brown sugar and toffee are prominent, along with a gentle oakiness and a hint of dried fruit. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and smooth, with a pleasant warmth that builds gently. A touch of lime zest provides a welcome citrus brightness that cuts through the sweetness.
The Finish
The finish is medium in length, with lingering vanilla, cinnamon, and a pleasant warmth. The caramel sweetness fades into a drier, more spice-led conclusion that is satisfying and clean. It is a finish that works beautifully in mixed drinks, providing flavour without excessive persistence.
Sailor Jerry is excellent with cola — the vanilla and cinnamon complementing the mixer's own spice notes beautifully. It also makes a surprisingly good Daiquiri variation, where the spices add an extra dimension to the citrus and sugar. For a spiced rum at this price point, the quality is genuinely impressive.
