First Impressions
Foursquare is, by any reasonable measure, the world's most acclaimed rum distillery. Under the stewardship of master distiller Richard Seale, the Exceptional Cask Selection series has produced some of the finest rums ever bottled. Sagacity is a blend of 12-year-old pot and column still rums, matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-Madeira casks. The name is apt — this is a rum of great wisdom and depth.
Tasting Notes
The nose is extraordinary. Rich dried fruit and dark chocolate lead, with vanilla and Madeira wine influence adding opulence. Polished oak, butterscotch, and orange peel create layers of complexity. It evolves constantly in the glass — five minutes, ten minutes, twenty minutes, and it's still revealing new notes.
The palate is one of the great experiences in rum. Dark chocolate ganache coats the palate with a richness that's almost indecent. Dried fruit compote — figs, dates, raisins — provides generous sweetness, while Madeira wine influence adds a wine-like elegance. Vanilla bean and polished oak tannins provide structure, butterscotch adds sweetness, and the layers unfold in sequence. This is a complete rum — every element is in its right place.
The finish is exceptionally long. Chocolate and dried fruit lead, Madeira richness adds depth, and oak spice evolves beautifully. It's a finish that rewards patience — five minutes after your last sip, you're still finding new notes.
How to Drink It
Neat. Only neat. In the best glass you own. With silence and attention.
The Bottom Line
Foursquare Sagacity earns a 9 — one of the finest rums ever produced, from the world's most respected distillery. At £225, it's expensive but not unreasonable for a rum of this quality — comparable quality in whisky or cognac would cost significantly more. If you ever have the opportunity to taste this, take it.
