First Impressions

The Colours of Rum Jamaican Edition No.4 is a twenty-nine-year-old Hampden, distilled in a pot still and matured in an ex-rum cask. What makes this release particularly remarkable is its fresh, piney quality — even after nearly three decades of maturation, the rum retains a vibrancy and energy that speaks to the extraordinary quality of the Hampden distillate.

Tasting

The nose is stunning. Fresh pine — unexpected and invigorating — leads alongside intense esters. Dark dried fruit and aged oak add mature complexity, overripe tropical fruit contributes the quintessential Jamaican character, and the overall nose is complex and evolved yet remarkably vibrant. Twenty-nine years have added depth without diminishing energy.

The palate is powerful and layered. Pine continues from the nose, with intense tropical esters providing that unmistakable Hampden signature. Dark fruit adds richness, aged oak tannins from nearly three decades of maturation provide structure, herbal complexity weaves through, and the texture is oily and muscular. At 58.2%, it's commanding but never aggressive.

The finish is extraordinarily long. Persistent esters, pine, oak, and waves of Jamaican complexity continue for minutes. It's a finish that demands contemplation.

The Bottom Line

At £350, Hampden 1992 is a collector's rum that delivers collector-grade quality. The combination of age, intensity, and that remarkable piney freshness makes this one of the most distinctive Hampden releases available. A rum for special occasions and deep appreciation.
