La Favorite is one of Martinique's most traditional distilleries, located in Fort-de-France and still using a steam-powered Creole column still that dates back decades. The Cœur de Canne — "Heart of the Cane" — is their blanc (unaged white) expression, bottled at a muscular 50% ABV that allows the full character of the fresh sugarcane distillate to express itself without restraint.

Like all AOC Martinique rhum agricole, the Cœur de Canne is distilled from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice, not molasses. The cane is harvested and pressed within hours, and the juice is fermented for approximately 48 hours before being distilled in the Creole column. The spirit is then rested briefly in stainless steel tanks before bottling. There is no barrel ageing, no filtration beyond the minimum, and no colouring — this is pure sugarcane spirit, unadorned and uncompromising.

On the Nose

The nose is a revelation for anyone accustomed to molasses-based rum. Fresh sugarcane leaps from the glass — green, grassy, and vibrant, like standing in a cane field after rain. There is a floral quality, almost like jasmine or gardenia, that is unique to fresh cane juice distillation. Beneath the vegetal character sits tropical fruit — banana, pineapple, and a hint of passion fruit — along with a mineral freshness and a subtle peppery quality from the 50% ABV. It is a nose that is entirely unlike any molasses rum, and it is utterly captivating.

The Palate

On the palate, the 50% ABV provides a satisfying warmth that carries extraordinary flavour. The sugarcane is dominant — grassy, green, and alive with freshness. The floral notes carry through from the nose, joined by a tropical fruit sweetness that is bright and clean. There is a mineral, almost saline quality that adds complexity, and a vegetal character — green banana, fresh herbs — that is the hallmark of quality agricole blanc. The mouthfeel is oily and substantial, with a weight that belies the spirit's unaged status.

The Finish

The finish is long and clean, with the sugarcane character persisting alongside a growing peppery heat. The tropical fruit fades into a drier, more mineral quality, while the grassy freshness provides a final, invigorating burst. It is a finish that cleanses the palate and immediately invites another taste.

La Favorite Cœur de Canne is the definitive Ti' Punch rum — the 50% ABV stands up magnificently to the lime and cane syrup, while the fresh sugarcane character harmonises with the cane syrup in a way that no molasses rum can match. It is also a revelation in a Daiquiri, substituting for standard white rum and transforming the cocktail into something entirely new. This is agricultural rum in its purest, most essential form — the very heart of the cane.
