First Impressions
Loveday is a Cornish distillery producing rum in small batches from organic molasses. The Gold expression is slowly fermented, carefully distilled, and aged in ex-bourbon casks, which have softened and rounded the spirit into something genuinely appealing. At 42% in a 50cl bottle, it's positioned as a craft offering with substance behind the story.
Tasting
The nose is gentle and inviting. Soft vanilla and golden toffee lead, with light oak adding structure. Dried banana provides a tropical note, and there's a subtle floral quality that adds charm. It's not a nose that demands attention, but it rewards it.
The palate is smooth and mellow. Golden syrup and vanilla custard form the core, with gentle oak spice adding warmth. Light tropical fruit floats through the mid-palate, and the overall character is rounded and easy-going. The bourbon cask influence is well-judged — present enough to add complexity but not so dominant as to overpower the rum's own character.
The finish is medium with vanilla, soft oak, and a clean golden sugar close. Unpretentious and satisfying.
The Bottom Line
At £37.95 for 50cl, Loveday Organic Gold is honestly priced for a genuine craft rum. It doesn't pretend to compete with Caribbean heavyweights on intensity, but it offers something different — a gentle, well-made English rum with organic credentials and real charm.
