First Impressions
Morvenna Distillers Cut #1 is a limited-edition release from the Cornish Distilling Company. Aged for three years in bourbon barrels and oloroso sherry casks, it represents some of the most ambitious British craft rum currently available. At 54.3% and bottled at cask strength, it's clearly aimed at the enthusiast market.
Tasting
The nose features milk chocolate prominently — a character inherited from the dual cask maturation. Dried fruit and vanilla add complexity, sherry sweetness provides richness, and warm oak ties things together.
The palate is rich and layered. Milk chocolate and dried fruit form the core, with the sherry influence adding fruit sweetness and the bourbon barrels contributing vanilla and spice. Oak spice provides warmth, and the character is full-bodied at 54.3%. The dual cask maturation works well, creating a more complex rum than either cask type alone could produce.
The finish is medium-long with chocolate, dried fruit, and a warm spiced close.
The Bottom Line
At £72.25, Morvenna Distillers Cut #1 demonstrates that British craft rum can compete on quality and complexity. The dual cask maturation adds genuine depth, and the cask strength bottling shows confidence in the distillate. A promising debut from a Cornish distillery with ambition.
