Mount Gay has been producing rum in Barbados since at least 1703, making it the oldest documented rum distillery in the world. The XO — Extra Old — is their flagship aged expression, a blend of rums aged between eight and fifteen years in a combination of American whiskey barrels and Bourbon casks. It is a rum that wears its heritage with quiet authority.
Under the guidance of master blender Trudiann Branker, the XO draws from both pot still and column still distillates. The Barbadian climate, with its constant trade winds and tropical heat, accelerates the maturation process dramatically, meaning that these eight to fifteen years in barrel produce a depth of flavour that cooler climates might take decades to achieve.
On the Nose
The nose is immediately inviting — rich caramel and vanilla form a luxurious foundation, over which sit notes of ripe banana, toasted coconut, and a gentle waft of oak spice. There is dried fruit here too, fig and date, along with a subtle smokiness that adds complexity. A hint of butterscotch sweetness rounds out a nose that is both approachable and rewarding.
The Palate
On the palate, Mount Gay XO is smooth and refined. The entry is buttery and warm, with toffee and vanilla leading into a mid-palate of dark chocolate, coffee, and toasted oak. The banana note reappears, slightly caramelised now, accompanied by warm spices — cinnamon, nutmeg, and a whisper of allspice. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and elegant, never heavy or cloying.
The Finish
The finish is long and gently warming, with lingering oak, vanilla, and a pleasant dryness that invites the next sip. The dark chocolate persists, joined by a final note of honey and tobacco. It is refined and dignified — a fitting conclusion to an exemplary Barbadian rum.
Mount Gay XO is best enjoyed neat or on the rocks, where its complexity can unfold at its own pace. It also elevates a classic Daiquiri into something truly special, the aged character adding depth and warmth to the cocktail's clean citrus framework.
