This Transcontinental Rum Line release was distilled in Panama in 2006 and matured for eight years in the tropical heat before being moved to Europe for an additional nine years of slower, cooler ageing. The dual-climate approach has produced a rum with both the intensity of tropical maturation and the refinement of European patience.
Tasting
The nose is rich and developed. Oak leads with confidence, with vanilla and dried fruit close behind. Caramel adds sweetness, leather provides a mature note, and there's a warm butterscotch quality that ties everything together. Seventeen years of ageing have produced a nose of genuine depth.
The palate is complex and well-integrated. Dark dried fruit and oak spice form the core, with butterscotch adding sweetness and leather contributing a mature, savoury note. Tobacco emerges in the mid-palate, and the texture is polished and mature — smooth without being thin. At 55.9%, the alcohol is remarkably well-integrated for the ABV.
The finish is long with oak tannins, dried fruit, butterscotch, and a dry, dignified close.
The Bottom Line
At £136, this 17-year-old Panama represents excellent value for a cask strength rum of this age and quality. The dual-climate maturation has produced a rum that balances tropical intensity with European refinement, and the result is deeply satisfying.
