First Impressions
If the Gunpowder Proof is Pusser's at its most powerful, the 15 Year Old is Pusser's at its most refined. Based on the same historic Admiralty recipe, fifteen years of ageing has smoothed and deepened the spirit considerably. At 40% ABV (lower than the Gunpowder Proof's 54.5%), it's designed for contemplative sipping rather than cocktail heroics.
Tasting Notes
The nose is rich and mature. Treacle leads, but with a sophistication that the younger expressions lack. Dried fruit, leather, and polished oak add complexity, while vanilla and dark chocolate provide sweetness and depth. There's a cigar box quality that signals genuine maturity.
On the palate, the fifteen years show. Treacle richness is refined rather than raw, dried fruit provides depth and complexity, and dark chocolate and leather add savoury sophistication. Polished oak contributes tannins without bitterness, and vanilla cream provides a smooth, sweet counterbalance. The Navy character is still there, but it's been educated and polished by time.
The finish is very long. Treacle and dried fruit layer with cigar box notes, fading to a warm oak close that lingers beautifully.
How to Drink It
Neat, full stop. The fifteen years of maturation deserve respect and attention. A proper glass, a comfortable chair, and time — that's all you need.
The Bottom Line
Pusser's 15 Year Old earns an 8 — the ageing has transformed the Navy formula into a genuinely refined sipping rum. At £74, it offers excellent value for a 15-year-old rum with this level of quality and heritage. The combination of naval history and mature complexity is compelling.
