On 31 July 1970 — a date known in the Royal Navy as "Black Tot Day" — the daily rum ration that had been issued to British sailors since 1655 was abolished. Pusser's Rum was created to preserve that tradition, using the original Admiralty blend specification that had been the Royal Navy's standard for centuries. The name "Pusser's" derives from "Purser" — the ship's officer responsible for distributing the daily tot.
The rum is blended from pot still and column still distillates sourced from Guyana (Diamond Distillery) and Trinidad, following as closely as possible the blend profile of the original Admiralty specification. It is aged in charred oak barrels and bottled at a robust strength that reflects the navy tradition of full-proof spirits. Pusser's donates a portion of its profits to the Royal Navy Sailors' Fund, maintaining a tangible connection to the service it celebrates.
On the Nose
The nose is rich and commanding — dark molasses and treacle, with a deep caramel sweetness. The Demerara rum component provides weight and earthiness, with notes of leather, tobacco, and dried fruit. There is coffee and dark chocolate, along with a warm vanilla oakiness. The Trinidadian element adds a lighter, more fragrant quality — coconut and tropical fruit beneath the heavier Guyanese character. It is a nose that speaks of history and tradition.
The Palate
On the palate, Pusser's is bold and full-bodied. The molasses and brown sugar are immediately present, followed by dark chocolate, coffee, and a rich toffee sweetness. The Demerara character dominates the mid-palate, with an earthy depth and dried fruit complexity that speaks to the wooden still distillation. Warm spices — allspice, cinnamon, and a hint of nutmeg — add layers of flavour. The mouthfeel is thick and satisfying, with a viscous quality that coats the palate. The strength provides a warming intensity without harshness.
The Finish
The finish is long and warming, with persistent molasses, coffee, and dark chocolate. The oak provides a gentle tannic grip, while the spices continue to build. There is a final note of brown sugar and dried fruit that provides a sweet, satisfying conclusion. It is the kind of finish that one imagines sustained many a sailor through a cold night watch.
Pusser's is magnificent in a Painkiller — the cocktail that Pusser's has trademarked — with pineapple juice, orange juice, and cream of coconut. The dark, rich rum stands up magnificently to the tropical sweetness of the mixers. It is also excellent in a Navy Grog or simply on the rocks, where its complexity and strength can be appreciated without distraction.
