Pusser's British Navy Rum is produced to the original blending specification of the British Royal Navy — the same recipe that was issued as a daily ration to sailors for over 300 years, until the last tot was served on 31 July 1970 (known as 'Black Tot Day'). The brand secured the rights to the Admiralty recipe in 1979, and it remains the only rum with an official connection to the Royal Navy.
The blend combines rums from Guyana (from the same wooden stills at Demerara that supplied the original Navy blend) and Trinidad (from Angostura), creating a spirit that is rich, dark, and deeply flavourful. At 54.5% ABV — approximately gunpowder proof — it has the weight and intensity that the Navy required.
On the nose, expect dense treacle, dark fruit, brown sugar, tobacco, and a whiff of sea salt. The palate is full and rounded with burnt sugar, dried fruit, molasses, warming spice, and savoury depth. The finish is long and commanding.
The Painkiller — Pusser's, pineapple juice, orange juice, and cream of coconut — is the brand's signature serve. Also superb in a Navy Grog or simply neat with a splash of water.
