Rhum J.M VSOP: The Spirit of Macouba
Agricole 43% ABV ABV Distillerie J.MPairs beautifully with dark chocolate
Discovered this pairing by accident — J.M VSOP with 70% dark chocolate. The earthy mineral character of the rum, the vanilla and tobacco from ageing, and the cane sweetness complement the chocolate beautifully. The volcanic terroir adds a savoury note. A revelation.
Northern Martinique character
Rhum J.M sits at the foot of Mount Pelée in northern Martinique, and you can taste the volcanic terroir. Rich, intense, with a deeper cane character than southern distilleries. The VSOP ageing adds vanilla, tobacco, and a gorgeous oak complexity. Earthy, mineral, and magnificent.
Volcanic terroir in every sip
The volcanic soil of Mount Pelée gives J.M's sugarcane a distinctive mineral richness that comes through in the spirit. The VSOP ageing adds vanilla, caramel, and oak, but the terroir always shines through. A more robust, earthy agricole than Clément. Very compelling.
A bit too assertive for me
The intense cane character and bold oak from J.M VSOP can be a bit much. I appreciate the depth — the vanilla, tobacco, mineral notes are all interesting — but the overall package is quite heavy for an agricole. I prefer Clément's lighter touch.
More intense than Clément
If Clément is the elegant side of Martinique agricole, J.M is the intense side. The cane character is richer, the oak influence is bolder, and there's a depth that demands attention. Vanilla, tobacco, earthy minerals, and a long, complex finish. Not a background sipper.
Among the best agricoles made
Rhum J.M VSOP is consistently one of the finest rhum agricoles available. The fresh cane character is rich and deep, the ageing adds vanilla, tobacco, dried fruit, and gentle oak. The mineral finish from the volcanic terroir is distinctive and memorable. A benchmark expression.
Martinique perfected
Rhum J.M VSOP is the complete agricole experience. The volcanic terroir of Mount Pelée, the rich cane character, the vanilla and tobacco from expert ageing, the mineral complexity on the finish — everything is in place. This is why Martinique has an AOC for rum. Absolute perfection.
