Smith & Cross is one of the essential bottles in rum. Produced at Hampden Estate in Jamaica's Trelawny Parish — one of the world's most celebrated pot still distilleries — and bottled at navy strength (57% ABV) with no added sugar or colour, this is rum in its most unapologetic form. It is funky, it is powerful, and it is magnificent.
The name dates back to the 18th century, when Smith & Cross was one of London's most important rum merchants, sourcing directly from Jamaica. The modern incarnation honours that heritage with a blend of Hampden's pot still rums — known for their high ester content, which produces the intense tropical fruit character and 'hogo' (the Jamaican term for the funky, complex aroma of well-made pot still rum).
On the nose, expect intense tropical fruit esters, overripe banana, pineapple, glue-like funk, brown sugar, and hogo. The palate is full-bodied and explosive with banana, pineapple, muscovado sugar, and unmistakable Jamaican pot still character. The finish is very long with a fruity ester tail.
This is a tiki essential. It makes a transcendent Mai Tai, an extraordinary Jungle Bird, and a Rum Punch of real substance. A few drops of water open up the complexity for neat sipping. An absolute must-have.
