Woods presents Wood's Old Navy Rum, a navy strength rum that demonstrates what England can produce when craft meets ambition. The brand has long been associated with quality in this category, and this bottling continues that tradition with confidence. Priced at £34.50, it represents a thoughtful proposition for anyone exploring the breadth of rum.

Woods approaches rum-making with a philosophy rooted in the traditions of England. The production method ensures a characterful spirit that showcases the raw materials, and the attention to detail throughout the process is evident in the glass. Every decision in the distillery has been made with the final flavour in mind.

On the nose, expect intense treacle, sea spray, dried plum, tarry rope, burnt sugar. The palate delivers intense with treacle depth, dried plum, charred oak, black pepper, and a powerful mid-palate. The finish is bold and lasting with treacle, dried fruit, and a salty close.

The higher strength makes this an outstanding cocktail rum — it punches through mixers without losing its character. Try it in a Navy Grog or a Painkiller, where the intensity is an asset. Neat sipping is rewarding with a few drops of water.

Wood's Old Navy Rum earns its place through consistent quality and genuine character. At £34.50, it offers good value and delivers a drinking experience that is a clear step above the ordinary. Woods has produced a navy strength rum that stands up well against the competition. A solid recommendation for both newcomers and experienced rum drinkers.

Connor McBride VIPsAllowed - Real navy rum lives on
9/10

In a world of smooth, sweet, approachable rum, Wood's Old Navy at 57% is a reminder of what rum used to be — bold, dark, and intense. Deep molasses, treacle, dark chocolate, burnt sugar, and a warming finish that lasts for minutes. This is rum with heritage and backbone.

Finn OBrien VIPsAllowed - Too harsh for modern palates
6/10

I respect the heritage but Wood's Old Navy at 57% is simply too rough for my taste. The alcohol dominates the molasses and chocolate notes, and the finish is more burn than flavour. The category has moved on and there are smoother options at this strength.

Liam Anderson VIPsAllowed - My grandfather's rum
9/10

Wood's Old Navy was what real men drank in my grandfather's day. The 57% proof, the dark molasses intensity, the burnt sugar and chocolate — it's unfashionable and unapologetic. But there's a soul to this rum that trendy brands can't replicate. Pour it with respect.

Sophie Brennan VIPsAllowed - Incredible in hot drinks

Wood's Old Navy in hot chocolate is transcendent. The 57% strength means the molasses, treacle, and dark chocolate notes survive the heat and mingle with the cocoa. It also makes the finest hot toddy — rum, honey, lemon, hot water. A winter essential.

Oscar Delgado VIPsAllowed - British navy tradition at full strength
8/10

Wood's Old Navy at 57% ABV is a proper overproof dark rum in the British tradition. Deep molasses, treacle, dark chocolate, and burnt sugar with a serious warming burn. It's not refined but it's authentic — this is what navy rum tasted like. Brilliant in a Dark and Stormy.

At 57% ABV, Wood's doesn't pull any punches. The dark molasses and treacle hit you first, then the burn, then the chocolate and burnt toffee. It's a bruiser of a rum that rewards dilution — with ginger beer it becomes magnificent. Neat, it's a challenge.

The navy strength means the rum flavour survives any cooking process. Christmas pudding, rum sauce, rum baba, brownies — Wood's Old Navy makes them all better. The dark molasses, treacle, and chocolate notes permeate everything. Keep a bottle in the kitchen.
