Bumbu takes its name from an old Caribbean word for the spiced rum drinks that sailors crafted from local ingredients centuries ago. The modern incarnation, created by Luca Gargano of Velier, is a blend of rums from eight Caribbean countries — Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Panama, El Salvador, and Guatemala — infused with natural spices and flavourings. It is, depending on your perspective, either a deliciously accessible introduction to rum or a heavily sweetened spirit that obscures rather than celebrates rum's true character.

The base blend is aged for up to fifteen years, with the various components married before the addition of vanilla, cinnamon, and other natural flavourings. The resulting spirit is bottled at 35% ABV — lower than many rum enthusiasts would prefer, but consistent with Bumbu's positioning as an approachable, cocktail-friendly spirit.

On the Nose

The nose is immediately and unambiguously sweet. Vanilla dominates, thick and almost dessert-like, joined by caramel, toffee, and butterscotch in abundance. Cinnamon provides warmth, and there is a bakery quality — brown sugar cookies, perhaps — that makes the whole experience feel indulgent. Beneath the sweetness, if you search for it, there are hints of banana and tropical fruit from the Caribbean base rums.

The Palate

On the palate, Bumbu delivers exactly what the nose promises. The sweetness is prominent — this is not a dry or austere rum by any measure. Vanilla and caramel coat the palate, with cinnamon and nutmeg providing spice warmth. The mouthfeel is smooth and almost syrupy at the lower ABV. There is some oak character — vanilla and a gentle tannin — that provides a modicum of structure, and the tropical fruit notes from the base blend add complexity in the background.

The Finish

The finish is medium, sweet and warming. The vanilla persists longest, with cinnamon and a touch of clove providing a spicy farewell. There is no bitterness or astringency — the finish is as smooth and approachable as the rest of the experience.

Bumbu is best served on the rocks, where the dilution opens up the aromatics and tempers the sweetness, or in a Rum Punch where its bold flavour profile stands up to fruit juices and citrus. Neat, it may be too sweet for experienced rum drinkers, but as a gateway spirit for those exploring rum for the first time, it has considerable charm. Judge it for what it is rather than what you wish it were, and Bumbu is a perfectly enjoyable bottle.
