First Impressions
To mark the distillery's 320th anniversary, Mount Gay began growing its own sugarcane once again. Master Blender Trudiann Branker aimed to reintroduce a sense of terroir to the estate, and this third Single Estate Edition is the latest expression of that ambition. Made exclusively from estate-grown sugarcane and bottled at 48%, it represents Mount Gay's most personal and terroir-driven expression.
Tasting
The nose immediately reflects the estate-grown approach. There's a sugarcane character that feels different from standard molasses-based rums — more direct, more connected to the land. Tropical fruit and warm oak support it, vanilla adds sweetness, and there's a distinctive Barbadian terroir note that's hard to describe but unmistakable once you notice it.
The palate is complex and terroir-driven. Estate sugarcane provides the foundation, tropical fruit adds sweetness, oak spice from the maturation provides structure, and vanilla softens things. The texture is refined and medium-bodied. At 48%, there's enough weight to carry the terroir expression without overwhelming it.
The finish is medium-long with oak, sugarcane, tropical fruit, and a clean, terroir-expressive close.
The Bottom Line
At £78.75, Mount Gay Single Estate Edition 3 offers a fascinating glimpse of terroir-driven rum from one of the world's oldest distilleries. Trudiann Branker's vision of reconnecting Mount Gay with its estate is producing genuinely distinctive rum. Recommended.
