Mount Gay has been producing rum in Barbados since 1703, making it the oldest commercial rum distillery in the world. The XO expression sits at the top of the core range, and it is a magnificent representation of Barbadian rum-making at its finest. Blended by Master Blender Trudiann Branker from a selection of double-distilled pot and column still rums aged between eight and fifteen years, it is a spirit of real sophistication.
The coral-filtered water of Barbados, the tropical ageing conditions where the angel's share claims up to 6% per year, and Mount Gay's centuries of expertise combine to create a rum of remarkable smoothness and depth. The ex-bourbon American oak barrels contribute vanilla, caramel, and gentle tannins without overwhelming the inherent character of the spirit.
On the nose, expect honeycomb, dried mango, cedar, butterscotch, gentle tobacco leaf, and ripe banana. The palate is exceptionally smooth with honey, dried apricot, cinnamon, gentle tobacco, vanilla custard, and perfectly integrated oak tannins. The finish is extended and refined with honey, cedar, and warm spice.
Sip this neat in a proper tasting glass. It deserves nothing less. A superb after-dinner rum and a worthy centrepiece for any collection.
